Honesty - Always the Best Policy?

Is honesty always the best policy?

In short, yes.  However, this doesn't by any stretch mean it's easy.

Many situations arise where being truthful can be uncomfortable, difficult and even hurtful to others, however this doesn't mean that being dishonest is the answer.  Most people, when it comes down to it, avoid being totally honest because of the aforementioned reasons.  Despite this, in order to have real peace of mind, facing reality regardless of what that entails is the best approach.  This is not to say that one is able to instantly go from being dishonest to being a bastion of truth overnight.  However, the more quickly one is able to face the truth of a situation the more quickly one avoids having to spend time and energy playing cover-up.  Not only does this way of operating add stress to one's life but also limits one's ability to accomplish goals and make a positive contribution to society.

One piece of advice the late senator Ted Kennedy spoke of, keeps things in perspective when it comes to fear and worry (which seem to be the primary reasons for avoiding honesty).  Whatever concerns and worries you have today, a year from now will be forgotten.  This piece of advice does a great job of putting things, that get in the way of being honest, in perspective.

With that, when it comes to honesty it's safe to say that most would agree that the more honest one is with themselves and others the smoother and more productive ones life will be despite potential short-lived worries and fears.
